Year 5 had a fantastic learning experience today at the National Museum of Wales in Aberystwyth.
When they arrived they were met by Owain Dafydd the Education officer. Firstly he talked generally about the library, when and why it was built. The pupils were enthralled hearing fascinating facts about the library.
They then had a tour into areas where the public are not allowed to go. The pupils were able to enter cells where important documents and artefacts are stored. They not only saw books but portraits, manuscripts, maps and other important historical items. They understood the importance of the library for Wales as a nation.
After lunch the pupils were actively involved in a workshop. They looked at 6 specific iconic items in the library. These were then sorted into chronological order. To actually see artefacts that were hundreds of years old enthused the children. They saw the first photograph ever to be taken in Wales, one of the original 12 Bibles that William Morgan translated into Welsh and also Hedd Wyn's actual poem that he won the Eisteddfod with before his death in World War one.
Every child and member of staff leaving the library had had a marvellous experience and they will remember it for a long time.
Years 5&6 were on Television tonight. Click on this link and forward it to minute 12.00 http://www.s4c.cymru/clic/e_level2.shtml?programme_id=533354404
Years 5 and 6 had a wonderful visit from a 93 year old World War 2 veteran today. Ernie Hughes who was a sailor in the navy during that time spoke about his experience. The staff and children were enthralled by the stories he had to tell. He also showed his medals and a picture of himself during the war.
Years 5&6 had a fantastic day today as part of their theme on The Blitz. Every pupil dressed up as a World War 2 evacuee as they visited Ty-Golau. ( www.tygolau.org.uk )
Ty-Golau is a health and wellbeing facility for people aged 50 and over, many of whom have memory problems, alzheimer's or dementia type illnesses.
Today they had a special World War 2 day where all the staff and teachers dressed up in costumes from that era. The children were able to see artefacts, listen about rationing and talk to some of the service users.
They then listened to the volunteers talk and demonstrate many aspects of the war including evacuees, women at war, the main characters and general life during that time. It was wonderful to see the pupils and service users interacting with each and they also enjoyed singing songs from that era.
Thank you to parents for dressing your child and also to the volunteers at Ty-Golau.

Years 5&6 went on a trip to The Tin Shed in Laugharne as part of their World War 2 studies. They first watched an interactive show of a lady's experience during The Blitz in Swansea. Many pupils were part of the production. They then had a short tour of the Tin Shed Museum seeing many artefacts from the War. Finally they had their lunch by Laugharne Castle and enjoyed an ice cream before returning.
Congratulations to the school cricket team who are the Llanelli West Champions. It was a beautiful day at Kidwelly Cricket ground where they won their group by beating Pembrey, Ysgol y Castell 2 and drawing with Ysgol y Ffwrnes. In the final they won a closely fought game against Ysgol y Castell.
They will now be competing in the Carmarthenshire Championships on 22nd June. Well done boys.
The pupils thoroughly enjoyed today's Food Standards agency show and workshops. They learnt the importance of food hygiene. The day was inovative and full of fun. The keys words were
Cleaning
Chilling
Cross - contamination
Cooking.
The children certainly understand the importance of hygiene after today.
