George is generating a buzz!

Burns (Pet Nutrition) volunteer Pat, and her dog George.

George, our reading dog, has been attracting plenty of attention lately – for all the right reasons!

Every week, George and his owner, Pat, generously volunteer their time to support pupils with reading, making a real difference to children's confidence, communication skills and enjoyment of books. There is growing recognition of the positive impact that reading dogs can have on young learners, supporting their social, emotional, physical, behavioural and cognitive development. At Penygaer, we are incredibly proud to be at the forefront of promoting this valuable work.

In May 2026, Mrs Conway, Mrs McKenzie, George and Pat travelled to London after George was named one of the winners of the National School Dog Alliance (NSDA) Primary School Dog of the Year award. They were invited to Parliament to celebrate this fantastic achievement.

George proudly represented both our school and Burns by Your Side at The John Burns Foundation as one of the country's Top Dogs in the Primary School category. Although he didn't take home the overall title, we couldn't be prouder of everything he has achieved and the lasting difference he continues to make to the children who read with him.

Following this recognition, ITV News contacted George and Pat to feature their inspiring work which you can watch here!.

Then, in June, George and Pat received another special invitation—this time to the Senedd in Cardiff. Once again, they had the privilege of showcasing the incredible work they do in our school to Members of the Senedd and invited guests. Two of our pupils represented Penygaer and were an absolute credit to the school, speaking confidently and beautifully about the positive impact George has had on their reading journey.

We are so proud of you both!
